Autumn Colors Center
In the Red Room, the Autumn Colors Center focused on describing items using the attribute of colors.
Light Table - Magic Forest
In the Orange Room, Mrs. Nielsen's light table became the setting for fantasy play. The children created scenes using fairies, trees, glass beads, translucent buttons, etc.
Autumn Tree Play Dough
In the Red Room, students applied their knowledge about tree parts by using brown dough to form trunks, branches, and a base for colorful sequin leaves.
This year, instead of taking a field trip to a pumpkin farm, we had the pumpkins come to us. Ms. Bielski arranged to have pumpkins delivered to our Outdoor Learning Center (playground) along with bales of hay and cornstalks so that we could have our own Autumn Celebration! Each student was able to take home a pumpkin to decorate and we had plenty left to have extended time working with wheelbarrows to "harvest" our crop.
Forest Ranger Center
In building awareness of our natural world, we felt it was critical to help our students understand the importance of living things. As a month long project in the Red Room, our students helped develop a mini-forest. Once the props were created, we set up a Ranger Station and Visitor Center. The Rangers had the responsibility of ensuring all the animals were safe in their homes by completing a checklist. Visitors were able to use IPad apps to learn about animals and their habitats. Additional literacy and math activities were integrated into this learning center throughout the month.
The month of October brought many outdoor adventures! We used our observation skills to find details in the natural elements of our playground. We matched detail pictures to objects, found leaves. and investigated bark. These beginning explorations were the start of our AM and PM tree studies.
In the Orange Room, there were many opportunities to practice counting, recognize numerals, and gather quantities. Our students have learned to share dice in game play and have done a great job using their turn taking skills.
Musical Story Theater
Red Room's Story Theater was set up with an IPad (for music) and a song board so the children could move the story characters as they sang along to this favorite song!
Outdoor Media Bin
In addition to the pumpkin delivery, we had our outdoor media bin filled with field corn, tractors, farm animals, pumpkins, and shovels. Mrs. Jones shared her outdoor canopy to protect the materials from rain and as a result, the children had many opportunities to explore the media bin.
Leaves, Leaves, Everywhere!
